How do elite sports and the mindset of athletes connect to high-pressure leadership?
Klitschko Ventures: Elite athletes train systematically to stay focused and perform when pressure is at its peak. How is academic research at WHU connected to the topic of sport and leadership?
Professor Schmidt: My role is to provide the evidence behind the experience. Sport offers us fascinating leadership situations, but stories alone are not enough. We want program participants to understand why certain behaviors work and how they can apply those insights within their own organizations.
Our research focuses on strategy, corporate foresight, organizational behavior, and leadership in times of uncertainty. Wladimir Klitschko and Tatjana Kiel from Klitschko Ventures contribute decades of experience in elite sports, in performing and leading under extraordinary pressure. How do you balance theory with practical experience?
Professor Schmidt: Research explains why certain leadership behaviors matter. By turning knowledge into concrete steps, routines, and mindset, participants can implement it directly in their everyday leadership practice.

Professor Schmidt: The cases are never lectures. They become conversations. Those discussions quickly reveal that leadership is rarely about finding perfect answers. It is about making the best possible decision despite uncertainty.
